KSA successfully designed two welcome centers for TDOT, strategically located in Mitchellville, TN, and Ardmore, TN. These state-of-the-art Welcome Centers were specifically crafted to accommodate the substantial flow of travelers on I-65 while adhering to the State’s sustainability standards. Our innovative approach included the implementation of geothermal HVAC systems, ensuring energy efficiency by relocating all HVAC equipment within the building envelope. Additionally, we enhanced insulation by incorporating foam insulation between the concrete block and stone of the exterior walls. As a result, we anticipate a significant reduction in energy usage, estimated to be one-third of the consumption seen in previous welcome centers.

These projects involved the simultaneous construction of two new rest areas positioned at the south and north ends of the State. Executed concurrently with separate contractors, both projects encompassed comprehensive development, featuring brand-new facilities and grounds. The scope included lobby/information centers, restrooms, maintenance buildings, picnic shelters, vending areas, parking facilities, and walking paths within aesthetically pleasing park-like settings. Strict adherence to ADA standards was maintained, meeting both Tennessee and Federal Guidelines for these sites and facilities.
